Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in The Kids of 216. Please see below for answers to commonly asked questions.

How did The Kids of 216 start?

The Kids of 216 was born from an MBA assignment “to solve a problem at work.” In researching the greatest needs of the Cleveland community, our founder discovered that involving youth in the most direct and hands-on methods possible was crucial for long-term success. Stephanie then pitched our model, to train at-risk youth for work while simultaneously restoring homes and community areas in Cleveland’s most vulnerable neighborhoods, at the Cleveland Leadership Center in February of 2017. Now as the executive director, she continues to pitch the model to city leaders, businesses, and organizations.

How are the students selected and paid?

Students must go through an extensive application and interview process to be selected for a cohort. The Kids of 216 welcomes all students within the age criterion to apply, regardless of criminal history or work experience. The organization selects students who express a strong desire to work in a trade or technical field and show commitment to the requirements and standards of the program. The Kids of 216 is a registered community partner and worksite with Youth Opportunities Unlimited and Jumpstart. These organizations subsidize internship employment for our students to complete the cohort training.

How are the community projects and residential renovations identified?

The Kids of 216 identifies community partners seeking beautification projects (playgrounds, gazebos, greenhouses) that are able to be maintained by specific individuals or that community partner. For residential renovations, The Kids of 216 identifies disabled residents, seniors, and poverty-stricken families whose homes are in need of immediate repair to meet code violations.

Is my donation tax-deductible?
